Community Policing
To our new residents
The Amherst Police Department would like to welcome you to the City of Amherst. The Amherst Police Department is located on North Lake Street just south of State Route 2. We are open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for your convenience. The front entrance to the police department is where the public enters to conduct any business.
We would like to let you know of some of the ordinances in our city that you may not be familiar with. The Amherst Police Department strives to enforce all of the ordinances in the city. We do this to make sure our city is a safe, clean and a quiet city to live in.
The following are some of our parking and local ordinances you may not be aware of:
It is a parking violation to park on the residential streets between the hours of 2:00am and 6:00am. In the downtown area the times are 3:30am and 6:00am.
It is a parking violation to park on the city streets and Municipal Parking Lot #1, which is located next to Amherst Cinema, when the snow exceeds 2 inches.
It is a parking violation to park on the tree lawns.
It is a parking violation to park in the downtown area in a space that is not marked as a parking space.
It is a violation for bicycles to be ridden on the sidewalks in the downtown area.
Dogs that bark continually or that run at large are a violation. The Amherst Police Department issues a written warning for the first offense and a citation for each subsequent offense.
Curfew Hours; 10:00 p.m. for minors 12 or less years, 11:00 p.m. for minors 13 thru 15 years, and 12:00 a.m. for minors 16 or more years of age. The curfew is in affect until 6:00 a.m.
These are by no means all of the laws we enforce but these are some of the laws new residents may not be aware of or their previous city did not enforce.
If you ever experience loss of electrical power at your residence after normal business hours, you most likely will be calling the police department to report the problem. When you call please tell the dispatcher your name, address, and that you are without power. Please do not ask the dispatcher questions as to when the power will be on or what the problem is. During the rare times we have a power loss in the city all of our phone lines are tied up. Unfortunately we have no idea when the power will be restored and multiple questions tie up our phone lines.
Please remember that you should call 911 for emergencies only. Dialing 988-2625 or any of our other phone lines that are listed in the telephone directory will enable you to make contact with the Amherst Police Department.
The Amherst Police Department is working with the Amherst School Board and through this joint effort a School Resource Officer has been added to the D.A.R.E. program.
The Amherst Police Department has been involved in Community Policing and ask that all of our residents assist us by calling to let us know when you see anything that you feel should be checked or if you have an idea that you feel will help us do a better job for you.
